Her family spelled her name GERKIN, although her brother and mother spelled GERKEN. It is spelled GERCKEN or GERKHEN in their Hanover parish.
Lena married John Theodore Brandt, Sr. in Strawn on June 18, 1882. They farmed near Strawn where 11 children were born. In 1905 they bought a farm north of LaHarpe, IL moved there with their family and continued farming.
The names of several of the children are not in the extended Gerken family records. Child Metta Brandt, 1894-1909, buried in this cemetery may be theirs. Information is welcome.
Lena was an avid gardener. She delighted in sending a large bouquet home with each visitor. She was also a committed member of the Evangelical Methodist Church.
The Selsingen parish in Hanover shows her birth date as 1859. That disagrees with the tombstone, I realize. I am showing the official church record.
