Harold L. Deiss, age, 67, of White River, SD died on Monday, May 13, 2002, at his home.

Harold Leroy Deiss was born on July 1, 1934, to Jacob and Mathilda (Deutsch) Deiss. He grew up on the family farm in the Surprise Valley area southwest of White River. Harold attended grade school at the Surprise Valley school, and high school in White River, graduating in 1953. He married Linda Hutchinson at White River on June 26, 1955. Harold worked for Haldon Amber, for Lawrence Krogman, and later operated the family farm before moving his family into White River. In 1972, he established the Harold Deiss Ditching business, in which he was still actively involved at the time of his death. In addition, Harold had several rental properties.
Harold was a member of the White River Fire Department for years. He was also a member of the United Methodist Church and was very active in the Lions Club. He loved working outdoors, enjoyed gardening and was especially proud of the tree belts he had planted on his property.
Harold loved to fish, anytime and anywhere. He had a special talent for fixing things. Harold and Linda visited their children often, and he was always pleased to find they had a project or two which needed his special touch. The grandchildren were a special joy, and he didn't miss a graduation or special occasion. In recent years, he and Linda attended many Post #22 baseball games, and youth soccer games in Rapid City, because of the involvement with the Robinson grandkids. He and his friend, Frank O. Perry, enjoyed many a game of cribbage. Harold was a prankster, and he enjoyed a joke on himself just as much as he enjoyed confounding someone else. He loved people and collected new friends wherever he worked or visited.
Harold Deiss will be missed by a host of people. He is survived by his wife, Linda; two sons, Cliff (Kathy) of Gillette, WY and Jim of White River; two daughters, Carol (Monty) Robinson of Rapid City and Janet (Phil) Jensen of Augusta, KS; grandchildren Darci Deiss, Kristina Deiss, Jennie Deiss, Tabitha Deiss, Matt Robinson, Lisa Robinson, Mike Robinson and Amy Robinson; step-grandchildren, Brandi Usher, Michaela Steiger, Weston Steiger, James Jensen, Faith Jensen and a special little friend, Monique Moran; his sister, Clara Mueller of Rapid City, and a sister-in-law, Rosie Deiss of White River as well as a host of other relatives. Among his mourners, we must also list his dog, Rusty, a faithful companion who was with him to the time of death. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Mathilda and one brother, Robert.
