Claude Jr was conceived on his parent's honeymoon. His mother Mabel Cecilia Pierce married Rev. Chilton when she was age 16. Little Claude was a piano wunderkind and took over playing for Methodist church services by age 10. He later assisted his father in composition of music for hymns. Claude was the first of ten children and later took so many parental responsibilities that the youngest ones referred to him as Dad, see Thomas H. Chilton.
At the age of 16 he studied dactylography (typing) and shorthand, earning a Gregg Institute business certificate. He transcribed every lecture at Birmingham Southern while earning B.A. and A.M. degrees with honor. At Vanderbilt University he earned another Master of Arts and in 1901 was Class Valedictorian. Simultaneously, he was ordained into the Methodist Episcopal Church ministry.
In 1903, at Pensacola, Claudius one & two sadly resigned from their Methodist Church affiliation. Rev. Claude First entered angry retirement. Rev. Claude Two took over breadwinner role for the next 12 long years. To get work, he fell back upon his skills learned at the Gregg Institute and began a career in the banking industry as a writer of Advertising. He married Clara Weidman, a 22 year old bank teller, in 1915. He earned her pique when asking, too often, for clarification of her intentions.
Two accomplishments are noteworthy. Claudius II teamed as the editor to the famous series of 9 books on PRAYER, composed by Edward McKendree Bounds & still popular today!
Second, Claudius II created a remarkable memorial to his father - publishing his best musical creations as "The Chilton Music for Standard Hymns" - 1922, financed by his 1st cousin Lavinia, the mother of famous Robert A. Lovett.
Claudius II inherited polycystic kidney disease from his mother and died at age 49, leaving a son aged 12 and a son aged 10.
