He was born June 22, 1933, in Centerton, Arkansas, to William O. and Grace E. (Sly) Standley. As a child, he lived in Ladore, Galesburg, Erie and St. Paul and was a 1952 graduate of Erie High School.
In January 1953, he joined the United States Navy. He was a First Class Machinist Mate having served in active duty four years and inactive duty four years. In 1954, he participated in the atomic test called Operation Castle.
Upon his honorable discharge, he worked for Boeing, Midwest Construction and Hy-Grade Construction. From 1973 through 2010, he worked for O'Brien Rock Company as diesel mechanic. He also served as chief of the volunteer fire departments in Erie and St. Paul and had worked several years for the Erie Ambulance Service.
He was a member of the Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Parsons and the George L. Hendricks American Legion Post No. 102 in Erie. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, horseback riding and playing dominos. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
In 1965 he married Sandra McDonald. They later divorced.
Survivors include: Three Sons – Randy Brown Erie, KS Kevin Standley and wife, Kathy Erie, KS Kelly Standley Aurora, CO Two Daughters – Rhonda Brown Parsons, KS Kimberly Moore and husband, Gene St. Paul, KS Fourteen Grandchildren Eight Great-Grandchildren
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, one brother and a great-grandson.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 11, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery near St. Paul. The family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m., Friday, at the church.
