Mary Louise Stepp, 89, a longtime Casa Grande resident, and retired nurse, died June 5, 2011 in Casa Grande.

The memorial service will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Southern Baptist Church. The graveside service will be in Mountain View Cemetery at 11:30 a.m.

Mrs. Stepp was born on Sept. 24, 1921 in Havre, Montana, to Joseph N. and Louise M. Boyer LaCroix. Growing up in homesteads around western Montana, she came to love the beauty of her surroundings and caring for animals. She became a Christian as a young woman and maintained a strong faith throughout life.

Louise did clerical work after graduation from high school and moved to the Los Angeles area. After requesting a release from employment with Lockheed Aircraft to join the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II, she trained and was stationed in New York and the Chicago area. She later returned to CA, where she was a pharmacist's mate in San Diego.

After her honorable discharge, she married Harry A. Underwood and settled in Casa Grande, where they had three sons. During and after her husband's long battle with and death from cancer, she supported her family by working as a seamstress in a textile mill.

She later met and married Ben D. Stepp and welcomed two more sons into the family. She returned to school and was a member of the first graduating class of the Central Arizona College nursing degree program. She worked as a licensed practical nurse at Hoemako Hospital and Casa Grande Regional Medical Center and assisted in surgery for many years.

Louise cared for her husband throughout a long illness and relished her time as "Grandma." Through her contentment, generosity and support of others, she displayed her faith and love to her family and to countless people around her.

Survivors include four sons: Marc Underwood, Roy Stepp, Jim and Rick Underwood; a sister, Joanne Swift, of Billings, MT; a brother, David LaCroix, of Los Angeles; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands; sister, Wenuna Bolch; two brothers: Frank and Bob LaCroix; and son, Ben Stepp Jr.
