Susan was the second child of nine born to John and Mary Gingrich Smith. Susan married John Davis about 1860 in Illinois. Grandmother, Senith Arvilla Davis, was born to this union in Henry County, Illinois on 8 August 1861. John Davis died when Arvilla was a very young child.

Susan married William B. Hendrickson On 9 Oct. 1862 in Peoria County, Illinois. To this union were born Dora A. and Wills B. Hendrickson. Sometime between 1870 and 1880 Susan married E. H. Watkins and moved to Texas taking her son Willis. Her daughters remained in Illinois living with other families. By 1900 Susan found herself widowed again, but remained in Texas until shortly before 1920 when she returned to Knox County to live with her widowed sister, Sarah A. Smith Sloan, and family.

Susan died 17 May 1926 at the Knox County Home in Williamsfield, Knox, Illinois where she resided for five years. Burial was at the Knox County Farm on 30 May 1926.
