Mrs. Berent was the widow of Nathan Berent and the devoted daughter of the late Ida May Glasser Caplan and Philip Caplan. Born Oct. 10, 1923, she moved from Llewellyn to Harrington to Westmoreland avenues in her youth. She attended Taylor Elementary and Blair Jr. High schools and graduated from Maury High and the Norfolk Division of William and Mary. During World War II, she worked at the Naval Receiving Station and later worked at the Armed Forces Staff College, alongside her lifelong friend, Louise Tingen. Mrs. Berent was also a Realtor with Glasser Realty.
On Jan. 10, 1954, she married Nathan Berent , a former boxer, owner of Berent 's Radio and TV Repair on Hampton Boulevard, and electronics mechanic with the Navy. Mr. Berent , the son of Fannie Resnik and Max Berent , was born July 23, 1915, and departed this life on June 23, 1998. Selma and Nathan lived on Roland Drive.
Mrs. Berent was a member of Beth El and Temple Israel and active in the Sisterhood. She was also actively involved in the Norfolk Senior Center.
Always active, youthful and full of vitality, Selma Faye's sweet, honest spirit will be lovingly remembered and missed by all who knew and loved her.
She was a loving mother to surviving sons, Steven and Irwin of Norfolk. She is also survived by a brother, Paul Glasser Caplan, and sister-in-law, Esther Berent , of Norfolk and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Forest Lawn Cemetery by Rabbi Phillip Crohn. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.
