INDEPENDENCE - Mr. Ernest B. Phipps, age 84, of Route 3, Independence (the Bridle Creek Community), passed away Sunday, October 28, 1990, at Twin County Community Hospital, Galax, Va.

He was born August 6, 1906, in Grayson County's Bridle Creek Community, to Frank and Madge Bryant Phipps. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Kirk Phipps.

He was a retired rural mail carrier and a member of the Bridle Creek United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Independence Masonic Lodge No. 129 A.F. & A.M. and the Grayson County Chapter of the S.A.R.

Surviving are one son, John Paul Phipps, Gallipolis, Ohio; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Frieda Phipps, Independence; five grandchildren, Thomas E. Phipps Sr., Richmond; Paula Doughman, Chesapeake; Pamela Phipps, Gallipolis, Ohio; Rebecca Haga and Martha Lineberry, both of Independence; five great-grandchildren, Jennifer Doughman, Chesapeake; Kathryn Phipps, Jessica Haga, both of Independence; Kayla Lineberry, Galax; Thomas E. Phipps Jr., Richmond.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Bridle Creek United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ron Rhodes and the Rev. Fred Jennings officiating. Interment will be in the Bridle Creek Cemetery. The body will remain at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Tuesday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the Bridle Creek Cemetery. Masonic Rites will be conducted at the graveside by the Independence Masonic Lodge No. 129 A.F. & A.M. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence, Va. is in charge of arrangements.
