Harry Kenneth Jackson was born as Ernest Jobson, the son of Arthur William Jobson and Susanna Bellars. He was from Canning Town, West Ham, England.

When his father remarried soon after his mother's death in 1881, he stowed away.
He was around 11 years old and worked as a cabin boy on a ship. He became a sailor and marine fireman and traveled the world several times. He settled down in Oakland, California in the mid-1880s. There he met Marian Goudie, a native of Australia.

Their marriage was short. After the divorce, he moved to San Francisco.. It was sometime between 1900 and 1901 that he changed his name to Harry Kenneth Jackson.

His second wife was Marguerite Mary Jones, a native of San Francisco, CA. Married in 1904, they were living in San Francisco when the 1906 earthquake struck. They had no home to go back to when it was all said and done. They moved around San Francisco before relocating to Oakland, CA.

Ernest worked the ferry boats that plied between Oakland and San Francisco. He was a marine fireman for many years.

Ernest and Marguerite had at least 5 children: John, Margaret, Anna, Julia, and Viola. The couple divorced sometime in the mid-1920s.

Ernest continued to live in Oakland where he died. He never remarried.
