Daniel Dawley enlisted as a private and was mustered into Company G, 2nd California Infantry, at the Presidio of San Francisco November 21, 1861. Private Dawley was mustered out at the Presidio of San Francisco November 21, 1864 (Orton, p. 479). Daniel filed for a Civil War veteran's pension in California April 23, 1900, and received application No. 1,247,475 and certificate No. 1,007,720.

Dawley came to CA in 1853. The man delivering groceries found him missing and he was located on a hillside above his house at Douglas Flat where he had fallen in a trench. He was taken to the county hospital and died in the county hospital. Parents Hannah Hopkins and James Dawley. Buried near his soldier friends, John Pray, John Lord and John Steinbower "Dutch John" at his request by the GAR.

Preceded in death by parents and siblings Amelia Dawley, Betsy Dawley, Susan Dawley, James Varner Dawley, Benjamin Garner Dawley, Nancy Hopkins Dawley, Thomas Hopkins Dawley, Amy Sheffield Dawley Gould, Isaac Anthony Dawley, John Tanner Dawley, Hannah Hopkins Dawley Gould. His father died in 1831 when Daniel was only 2 years old.
