2nd Lt. Chaffin was the pilot of U.S. Army Air Corps B-24D Liberator # 41-24224. He was killed when the bomber struck a mountainside seventeen miles South-East of Tobe, Colorado while on a navigational training mission out of the Pueblo Army Airfield. Nine other Airmen also perished.

Second Lt. William W. Chaffin, son of Mr. & Mrs. George Chaffin of Poynor, is one of ten crew members who lost their lives last week-end in the crash of a B-24 bomber.

The bomber, based at the Pueblo Army Air Base, Pueblo, Colorado, crashed Thursday morning fifty-five miles East of Trinidad, Colorado. Army Officials were investigating the crash Saturday, according to the last report.

Lt. Chaffin visted his parents during a short leave last January. At the time he was being transferred to the Fort Worth Air Field for a period of nine weeks to fly the Army's four-engine B-24 Liberator.

Funeral services for Lt. Chaffin were held Wednesday July 5 at 3 o'clock at the Poynor Baptist Church with the pastor officiating.

Burial was in the Poynor cemetery.

Surviving are his parents; one brother, Lt. G.C. Chaffin Jr., Army Air Corps; two sisters, Mrs. Doris Fuselier, Culver City, California and Miss Marge Chaffin, Poynor.
