Gideon Andreas Achter was born in Breslau, Germany on 13 September 1925, the oldest son of Hermann Erich and Martha Marie Fruehauf Achter. He died on 1 June 2011 of complications of diabetes.

As a young man, Andy served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He married Anna Cipriati, and they had a daughter. They divorced in 1943. He married Vertice Terry Smith in 1946. Andy and his sons got involved in scouting, where he continued to serve for many years, earning a Silver Beaver Award.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Catherine, and his son Bruce. He is survived by his wife, his step-daughters Sherlene (Bob) and Renee, his three sons Bryant (Pam), Ronald (Brenda), Richard (Debbie), and Bruce's widow Claudine, three siblings, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, 9 June 2011 at Mountain View Memorial Estates Mortuary, 3115 East Bengal Boulevard (7800 South), Cottonwood Heights. There will be a short viewing held just prior to the funeral, at 10:00 a.m.
Interment will be in the Mountain View Memorial Estates Cemetery.
