At age 17, Houston (pronounced "HOW-ston") moved to California for five years. In 1877, he entered the Baltimore Medical College and received his diploma as a Doctor of Medicine in the spring of 1880. He moved to Richmond to begin his practice, and joined the Medical Society of Virginia in 1882. Also, in June of that year, he married Miss Josephine Dooley at Richmond, Virginia. In 1883, he established the Atlanta Journal of Medicine.

Dr. Houston was a member of the Catholic Church, and funeral services for him were held at St. Peter's Cathedral in Richmond. He was survived by his wife, a daughter of prominent Richmond businessman John Dooley, and by their only child Eleanora "Nora" Houston, a noted Virginia artist and social activist.
