John Christian Church was born about 1756 in VA. and died 1813-14 in Hawkins Co.,TN. He served in the Revolutionary War as a private in Captain David Laird's Company of the 10th VA. Regiment, commanded by Col. Edward Stevens; he also served under Lieut. Nathan Lamme. He was under the command of Gen. George Washington at Valley Forge in 1778. John Christian was sick during that ill fated winter and was in the hospital according to his paycards. This is where Henry C., John Christian's oldest son was conceived according to his paycards (that I have researched the movements of his company from them) and the date of Henry C.'s birthdate from my assumption. Nine months prior to Henry's birth his father was encamped at Valley Forge. Henry was born in Feb. 1779 while camped at Middlebrook. His three other known children: Thomas J., George W., and Mary Anne. "Christian" Church served continuously in the War from Dec. 23, 1776 to July 7, 1783. At Valley Forge he was with the 6th VA Continental Army... the 6th was consolidated into the 3rd, which was consolidated into the 2nd. " Almost all Virginians serving in the Continental Army were captured in the disastrous surrender by General Benjamin Lincoln of the army at Charleston, SC. in May 1780." The movement of Virginia troops to Charleston can be found in M. Lee Minnis, The First Virginia Regiment of Foot. Westminster, Md.: Willow Bend Books, 1998. Prisoners of the siege of Charleston were kept in multiple locations including prison ships, the old barracks where the College of Charleston is today, and the Old Exchange and Provost "Dungeon. So he would have been taken prisoner at Charleston. From "Relieve Us of this Burthen: American Prisoners of War in the Revolutionary South, 1780-1782" by Carl P. Borick gives insight to the Charleston prisoners. John Christian Church was pressed into service with the Duke of Cumberland's Regiment and sent to Jamaica. On page 121 states that in the first six months of 1783, only eight men deserted from the regiment in Jamaica, of which only two were recruited from the Charleston prisoners: John CHURCH and Samuel THOMAS. Military records show he was mustered out on Jan. 1, 1783; discharged at Winchester Barrick's in Winchester, VA. on July 12, 1783. In payment for his services he received 200 acres of land in 1783. He assigned his acreage to Robert Means on May 29, 1792 in Bedford Co.,VA. I believe it was around this time that he headed for Carter's Valley in Hawkins Co.,TN. He bought land in Hawkins Co.,Tn. Jan. 5,1797 from John Galbraith. The description of John Christian's land is: on the North side of the Holston River on the East fork of Renfroe Creek. This property is close to present day Church Hill, TN. Hwy. 11W, turn on Fudges Chapel Rd. John Christian's three sons inherited this property which they sold back and forth between themselves until in 1821 George was in possession of the whole 100 acres which he sold to Robert Wright for $1,000. Robert Wright was the son-in-law of John Galbraith. The closest old family cemetery to this property is the BLAIR-ARMSTRONG CEMETERY where Armstrong, Sensabaugh, Galbraith are buried. There are lots of field stone graves when I visited there. Find A Grave GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 36.34170, Longitude: -83.20310. Listed as Blair Cemetery. It is my assumption this is where "Christian" Church is buried. If you are standing in the cemetery and look across the road, that was part of Church property. John Christian's will, made May 30,1813 was proved in Hawkins Co. on March 1,1814, indicates he died latter part of 1813 or early 1814. A few years after John Christian's death, the two youngest sons (Thomas J. & George W.) and daughter (Mary Anne) came with their mother to Barren Co.,KY. about 1818. The oldest son, Henry, stayed in TN. moving to Hancock Co., near present day Sneedville on Copper Ridge. Special thanks to my cousin, Suzanne Wuetcher Bailey, for proving John Christian Church's revolutionary war record for future generations to belong to the DAR & SAR if you choose to. Also special thanks to descendant, Perry Church, for information on John Christian Church's imprisonment. Researched and written by Laura J. Stewart , 3rd great-granddaughter of John Christian Church.

Excerpts are taken from my book "Descendants of John Christian Church - Patriot of Valley Forge" by Laura Stewart Civey - Stewart Publishing - Fourth Edition - Dec. 2002
