Luther Martin Tanner Sr. was born in Kentucky 25 Dec 1860. His father Calvin Tanner was a hotel keeper. In 1880 he was living with his brother Charles and wife Melissa Tanner and working on a farm. In 1900, he worked in a saw mill and cottin gin in Lauderdale County, TN. Around 1900, he moved to Blytheville, AR and in 1910 he worked as a machinist in Mississippi County, Arkansas. In 1920 his occupation is listed as "jailer" assumed to be a sheriff and at that same time his son Joe was listed as a deputy county clerk. In 1930 he is listed as a carpenter.

He married Elizabeth (Lissie) May Tanner on 28 Jul 1883 probably in Lauderdale County and they had the following children: Wilo Mamie Tanner (1885-1975), Nellie Pearl Tanner (1888-1964), Edna Alma Tanner (1891-1940), Ida Katherine Tanner (1891-1971) and Joseph Lusk Tanner (1893-1962).

His first wife Elizabeth died 26 Oct 1911 and he remarried Maud Ursula McGee Knott (b: 18 Oct 1891, Franklin, TN, d: 2 Jun 1923, Gider, AR). They married 14 Sep 1914 in Mississippi County, AR. She had already had one daughter from a previous marriage to Raymond C. Knott: Mattie Lee Knott (b: 2 Sep 1912, Paragould, AR, d: 4 Aug 1960, St. Louis, MO). They then had the following children: Luther Martin Tanner, Jr. (b: 12 Jul 1915 Mississippi County, AR, d: 25 Nov 1915, Mississippi County, AR), Juanita Hazel Tanner (b: 23 Nov 1916, Paragould, AR, d: 6 Dec 1965, Bethesda, MD), Louise Tanner (b: abt 1920, Paragould, AR), and Elizabeth Lucille Tanner (1919-1922).

Luther Tanner Sr. died on 16 Aug 1930 of a heart attack in Newport, AR and is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in Blytheville, AR in a family plot with his two wives, and some of his children and grandchildren.
