Recently discovered was Hester's first marriage on 1 Aug 1819 to Abner Garard, the son of Justus Garard and Rachel Corbly, and the grandson of Rev John Garard and the Revolutionary Rev. John Corbly. Of this union were four known children born, Justus Garard/Garrard born in 1820 and died in Kansas sometime after 1885, Kinsley Garrard born in 1824 and died in 25 Jul 1892 Monongalia County, West Virginia, Rebecca A (Garard) Boydston born 1822 and died in 1860 here in Knoxville, Marion, Iowa and Elizabeth Jane (Garard)Patterson (wife of Dr Robert S Patterson (1816-1864)) born 1826 and died sometime after 1880. Hester's grandson, and son of Justus Garard, Abner F Garrard (1852-1878) is buried in nearby Lucas County, Iowa.
