Ben moved with his family to Chicago as an early teen, he later worked on the elevated train as a motor man, moving to Minnesota in 1930. He and Edna Benson were married on June 1934 in a double ring ceremony, along with Verlon Benson and Georgia in the Methodist Church in Deer River. He later worked at Silver Bay building homes. He also did millwright work in the mines and the power plant in Cohassett. They were the parents of three daughters.
