SAD DEATH OF MRS. C. M. BRIGGS
Was A Charter Member Of The Erie Bureau Of Charities And Vice President Of That Organization.
Resided In This City During All Of Her Long and useful Life-Aged Lady Passed to the Great Beyond, Early Saturday Morning.
---------
The death of Mrs. Sarah H. Briggs wife of C. M. Briggs, which occurred early Saturday morning, is universally mourned throughout the city. Nowhere outside the family is the loss more keenly felt, perhaps, than among those with whom she labored so long and faithfully in the interests of charity and the church. Her associations with the Erie Bureau of Charities, the Florence Crittenton Home and Park Presbyterian church, will cause her memory to long be loved and cherished by those who knew her best.
Mrs. Briggs was the daughter of the late Hiram Slocum and was born in this city over 75 years ago. She was married Oct. 9, 1851, to C. M. Briggs. The union was blessed with four children, all of whom survive. Mrs. Briggs is the first to depart this life, thus breaking the family circle. The four children who survive her are: Anna, now Mrs. Fred Lewis; Harriet A., now Mrs. George Sisson; Ida H.., now Mrs. Dr. R. W. MacDonald, all of this city, and William S. Briggs of Cleveland. Besides the husband and children she is survived by six grandchildren, Helen and Charles, children of Mrs. Lewis; Merle and Roland, children of Mrs. Sisson; Marian, daughter of Mrs. MacDonald, and Gladys, daughter of William Briggs.
The deceased was a charter member of the Erie Bureau of Charities and was present in the rooms in the Scott block on the night when the organization was effected. A few weeks ago she was elected vice president of the bureau. Mrs. Briggs served as an officer of the organization many times. She was also one of the best workers among the ladies of the Florence Crittenton home and her splendid services in connection with the Humane society of this city cannot be spoken of too highly. She was a woman of sweet and gentle ways and to know her was to love her. Mrs. Briggs was a member of the Park Presbyterian church and for years taught a Sunday school class in that church.
Her death was but the peaceful falling asleep of a weary child. During the last days of her illness she bore her suffering patiently, as if but awaiting the summons to the better land. She was cheerful to the end and with a smile for her children about her closed her eyes to earth and her gentle spirit went back to the Creator.
The funeral will be held from the Park Presbyterian church, Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. All the friends who desire to view the remains may call at the residence, 31 1/2 Sassafras street, at any time up to 12 o'clock tomorrow.
