Bunting enlisted in the 20th NC 5/61 at 16 years old, but in July withdrew and entered UNC and studied one year. He then joined the 5th NC Calvary, CO. C. Fought at Brandy Station, Gettysburg, Yellow Tavern where Jeb Stuart was wounded and died. On 4/3/1865 at Namozine Church, he was captured and confined at Pt. Lookout Maryland until June 28, 1865 release. He was seriously wounded once in the ankle. After the war he served as Deputy U.S.Marshall for the Eastern District of NC and served assistant tax collector for the City of Wilmington a little over 12 years. He was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Holmes Bunting of Sampson County.
