At an early age she began her affiliation with the Christian Church.
In early childhood she moved with her parents to Bethany, MO. There she grew to young womanhood and received her education in the public schools.
On October 1, 1890, she was united in marriage to Milton A Higgins. To this union were born five children: Merle C Higgins and Paul Higgins of Iona, MN; Curtis Higgins of Chicago, IL; Milton Robert Higgins; and Eva (Higgins) Lorenzen of Benkelman, NE. In 1906 they moved to Dundy County, NE, where she resided up to the time of her death; except for three years when they lived at Iona, MN.
Mettie first came to Haigler, NE, in the early nineteen hundreds; and with her husband, Milton A Higgins and their children, they lived on and developed their ranch. After several years they moved to Benkelman, NE, and made their home there for many years until several years ago when they went to Iona, MN, to be near their sons, Merle, Paul, and Milton.
After her husband of 53 years, Milton A Higgins, passed away about two years ago, Mettie came back to Benkelman, NE, to make her home with her daughter, Eva M (Higgins) Lorenzen. Soon after her youngest son, Milton Robert Higgins, also returned to Benkelman, NE.
Mettie was a splendid woman and citizen in all the name implies and was fully worthy of the high esteem which she enjoyed throughout all the years that Dundy County, NE, was her home.
Her husband, Milton A Higgins, preceded her in death in November 1943.
Pallbearers were: A L Moores, Lester Kline, Don Carroll, Marlin Premer, Andrew Grimmeiss, and Glenn Woodruff
