Harold (It is believed that his first name was Howard.), 223 Sumner Street, dropped dead at 8 A.M. Wednesday at the rear of 819 Riehl Street, where he was preparing to drive to Plainfield, Iowa with his father, Joseph George Griffith. He was 43 years old.
After backing it out of the garage, he was about to fill the radiator of the car, owned by his brother Paul (Alva Paul Griffith), who rooms at 819 Riehl. His father said he dropped dead of a sudden heart attach just as he was about to reach thru the door of the car to turn the motor off. He had been suffering minor heart attacks for several months.
Mr. Griffith had been employed as a clerk at the John Deere Tractor company most of the time since he came to Waterloo about 12 years ago with his parents, J.G. and Gertrude Leanna (Emily)Griffith. He was born April 9, 1894, at Plainfield, Iowa where his grandfather, A. P. Griffith, had settled as an early day livestock buyer. J.G. Griffith followed his father in the business, and H.L. Griffith had assisted him while they lived at Plainfield. Father and son had been planning to spend the day looking after business affairs there. Surviving besides the parents are three brothers and four sisters: Harold Wendell Griffith, Florence Susannah Griffith, Alva Paul Griffith, Joseph George Griffith Jr., Blanche Emily Griffith Greenlee, Helen M. Griffith Lindquist, and Virginia Ruth Griffith Franz.
H.L. Griffith's maternal grandparents were Abraham Welch Emily and Susannah Wightman Emily of Denver, Colorado, formerly of Horton, Iowa. He did not have a spouse or children.
