William Petty was the son of Effie Cordelia Thomas and Palmer Wood Petty, both born in Mississippi. They married in Mississippi in 1905, and their first four children were born there:
Irby Woods in 1907
William Walter in 1908
Gladys Estelle in 1909
Claude in 1912
In 1913 the family moved to Texas and settled in Cherokee County. They had five more children born in Texas:
Mary Elouise born in 1916
An infant boy born and died in 1917
Susie Mae born in 1923
Alma born in 1925
Elton Doyle born in 1928
William married Adell Bates, daughter of Billie and Lou Bates. They had two sons, Kenneth M. Petty born in 1936 and William Glenn Petty born in 1940.

Mr. Petty was employed as a Constable for Pct. 5 in Cherokee County. He was a member of the Wells Masonic Lodge.

At the time of his death in 1984, Mr. Petty was survived by his wife Adelle; his son Glenn; brothers Claude, Forest and Doyle; sisters, Gladys Smith, Mary Smith, Sue Broach and Alma Broach; and 3 grandchildren. His nephews served as pallbearers, with Cherokee County Sheriff Officers serving as honorary pallbearers.
