*** Today we know that the Deppen family was Swiss but whoever signed Christian up for the Rev War took it for granted that anyone speaking German had to be German and seeing German on anything then was incorrect as Germany did not exsist until 1871 when 27 little countrys joined together to form 'Germany' Many different countrys had regions that the people spoke German. As for signing an allegence, they were taken off the boats and marched to the court house to do so. Christian signed the same date and just above George Yeakley, soon to marry his daughter Ann Deppen. I have to differ on where Christian was born at this point, it was Thurn, Canton, Switzerland. They had to board boats in the German speaking region however. He died at Womelsdorf, Berks Co.,Pennsylvania, at the very large "Ruchti" plantation of Veronica's parents. His parents, with children, arrived on the boat "Princess Augusta", arriving on 15 September 1736. I USED THE "Counting Kindred" book to start my research on. I also have Christian's will and immigration records. The book was difficult to follow so my friends sat and we read and reread the pages until we could be sure we followed it correctly. When we finished, I took it to the LDS Church Temple in Mesa, Arizona for their opinion. I am positive we followed it.
Linda Morris== descendent of Christian and Veronica thru Anna their daughter and George Yeakley.

I bought the Book, so I know it is still possible to do so. What this book did for me, I don't expect anyone else to get quite that much out of it but it is a marvel in its own right. I knew because of my fathers family that Pine Grove, Pa was way beyond the frontier. The Hetzel church was built by Peter Hetzel, my GGGG Grandfather. He started the church in an 10X14 ft. cabin. Some of the families that this book mentions are the members of this church. In 1807 most of the members of this church picked up and moved to Montgomery Co., Ohio where they were to collect their Rev War pensions and land grants. So when I found Peter Deppen, Christian and Veronica's son buried there, it did make a much stronger connection for me mainly because I also found George Yeakley on those tax records. Just to think that years ago my ancestors knew each other not well but very well, depending on each other in order to survive. These people were from both my fathers and my mothers families. WOW And here I sit, 312 years later from Chritians birth, a product of the Yeakley, Deppen, Schnepp & Hetzel families who knew each other way back before 1776. As for my children, their fathers grandmother came from the line of Barbara Deppen who married Peter Zimmerman who changed their last name to Carpenter. When I found Canton of Bern on Christians military records, I looked it up on the internet. Beautiful is just not good enough to describe it. I wonder why anyone would leave there. But was surprised to find that even back in the 1700's the region was French & German speaking.

DAUGHTER OF BETTY LOUISE YEAKLEY & CLARENCE DOILE, IT IS HIS FAMILY THAT DECENDED FROM REV. HETZEL

THIS CEMETERY WAS ORIGINALLY THE DEPPEN FAMILY CEMETERY WITH ONLY CHRISTIAN AND VERONICA BURIED THERE. THEY HAD NAMED THEIR PLANTATION (FARM) AS "THE WOMELSDORF PLANTATION" AND THE TOWNSHIP FOLLOWED.

There is one more thing, Mr. Moyer, whose family if from Pine Grove for a bunch of generations, was so very kind and sent me the tax records for the correct time frame, during the Rev War and before and after. He also sent some church records but, they both confirmed every thing written here. I hesitate to write his name here without his permission. What a great guy!

DEPPEN ANCESTORS:
1-Christian Deppen Sr. 1670-aft 1719
m. Anni Bachmann Bohlen 1673-?
2-Christian Deppen & Ann

Grandfather FAG 191127371 Christian Bolhan

I have 4 more generations on the Deppen Family and...my ex-husbands Grandmother is from Barbara Deppen Zimmerman/Carpenter. So that makes my children related twice to the Deppens!!!!

I also found a reasonable explanation for the name change of Barbara Deppen and her husband, Peter Zimmerman changing their name. One I should have guessed. Peter was a Loyalist and when the war ended, he found himself not too welcome in Pine Grove. People who were Loyalist found that their lands and property were taken from them. Lucky for Peter & Barbara, Peter had a brother in North Carolina who had already changed the spelling to Carpenter, which is what Zimmerman actually means in German. They were invited to go to North Carolina and be with him and his family.
