Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Memorial Chapel of the Summers-Marshall Funeral Home, with the Rev. Coy Cleghorn officiating. Interment will be in Crest Haven Memorial Park. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Olney Veterans organizations.
Mr. York was a native of Illinois and was born at Palestine, the son of Charles Houston York and Mary Elizabeth Wright York. He was married to Mable King February 17, 1940. He was well known in Veteran circles and was the popular manager of Richland Post No. 30 of the American Legion for 17 years. He served in the United States Army from June 14, 1944 to November 23, 1945. He was serving in our forces abroad when he was captured by the German Forces and was a Prisoner of War for several months. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW Post No. 4226 and The Disabled American Veteran orgainzation in Olney.
He leaves his wife Mable and four sons: S/Sgt. Robert E. York with the Armed Forces in Berlin, Germany, Derek York a SP4 with the National Guard in Phoenix, Ariz., PFC Thomas C. York at the Park Depot in Granite City and Darvin York at home. There are 3 grandchildren. He also leaves three sisters and three brothers: Charles and Russell York both of LaPorte, Ind., Alfred York of Palestine, Mrs. Julia Martin of Chicago, Mrs. Katie Cortelyu of Robinson and Mrs. Peggy Myles of Tucson, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 sisters, Helen, Lydia, Emma and Rose and two brothers, Earl and his twin brother, Herbert.
