He was the ninth of 12 children of his parents. Married Ethel Van Fleet (1886-1954) on November 18, 1910 in Leavenworth County, Kansas (Book: P, Page 232); they had one son, Willis Benford Johnson, Jr. After Ethel died, he married Mrs. Edith M. Dunham on May 14, 1955 (she had two daughters, Lois and Wilma).

He lived in Olathe, Kansas from 1918 until his death in 1965. He was a farmer, and also worked for the noxious weed control department of Johnson County. He was a member of the Budd Park Christian Church.

Died August 23, 1965 at home in Olathe, Johnson Co., Kansas, age 75 years 3 months 28 days, of lung cancer. His memorial service took place at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 25, 1965 at Frye Chapel in Olathe, the Rev. Dwight Dussair of the First Methodist Church of Olathe, officiating.
