George N. Griffin Dies at Millerton Home – Every Member of One of the State's Largest Families Living – Ten Daughters and Five Sons Survive
Millerton, Dec. 7 – George N. Griffin, 70 and father of fifteen children, died Sunday on his son's farm here. Born in Madison County, N.Y., George Griffin was the descendant of an Irish family which settled in this county in 1774. He was married but once, to the former Louise Barden (s/b Barton), of Christian Hollow, who died three years ago at the age of 62. It is remarkable to note that all of the fifteen sons and daughters of this family are living. Only one child born to this union, a son, died at the age of five weeks. The family is believed to be one of the largest in the state. The funeral was held Tuesday at the home of another son, Walter, of Millerton. After a prayer service at the home at 2 p.m. and a service at the Methodist church at 2:30 o'clock, Mr. Griffin was laid at rest in the Millerton cemetery. The surviving children include: Robert , Mrs. Lynn Layton, of Mansfield; Cornelius H. Griffin, of Hornell; Miss Georgia A. Griffin, of Elmira; Mrs. Harry Tice, of Sylvania; Mrs. Ralph Davidson, Joseph Griffin, of Elmira; Mrs. Grant Lewis, of Mansfield; Cecil Griffin, Frederick Griffin, of Rutland; Mrs. Floyd LeBarre, of Elmira; Mrs. Owen Hart, of Tioga; Misses Frances and Alice Griffin, of Elmira. Also 23 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren survive.
