BOY DROWNS
Coroner McDaniels received a call from Washougal, Washington Monday stating a boy had drowned in the Washougal River in Skamania County. The coroner and P. Swanson left Monday afternoon and were directed up the north fork of the Washougal River. Not being able to reach the place by auto, the trip was continued through the timber to within six miles of the copper mines, where the body was found in a deep hole of the water.
William Leonard, 15-year-old son of Mrs. Leonard living on Bear Prairie, Washington, and several companions went on a fishing trip up the river Sunday. Coming to a rock along the bank of the stream, William stopped to fish, the rest going farther up. Returning later searching for the boy, his lunch was noticed where he had sat down to fish, and rod and reel were in the water. His body was later found in the pool below. He had slipped off the rock and, being unable to swim, sank in the cold water.
The body was recovered by the undertaker and party and taken to the auto on a stretcher made of poles and back and then taken to the unfortunate boy's home. Burial was at Portland, Oregon.
(Published in the Skamania County Pioneer Newspaper, in Stevenson, WA on 16 June 1922. Information found in the "Obituaries from the Skamania County Pioneer Newspaper 1900-1929", compiled by Homer and Alice Townsend, 119 W. Burgen, Goldendale, WA 98620 in March 1985.)
