"Gladys Irene (Strickland) Mahan, age 94, of Brownwood died Wednesday night at the Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

"Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday in the Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bill Slaymaker officiating. Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 - 8 PM on Friday at the funeral home.

"She was born Gladys Irene Clack, daughter of Sim and Laura Lee Ratliff Clack, in Elkins, Brown County, Texas on June 8, 1918. She married John David Strickland on December 31, 1939 in Novice, Texas. He preceded her in death and she later married C. G. "Bo" Ransom on October 11, 1975 in Brownwood. Following his death she married Ellis Mahan on June 12, 1992 at the Concorde Baptist Church near Bangs. He also preceded her in death.

"Gladys was a wonderful mother and "Nanny" to all. She began her career as a waitress at the Yellow Wagon and later went to nursing school and became an L.V.N. She became a nurse at the Medical Arts Hospital and later at Brownwood Regional Medical Center. She later became Director of Nurses at Cross Country Care Center until her retirement.

"She was a past member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She was past president of the Brownwood Ladies Elks B.P.O E. # 2300 and became a Lady Elk of Texas where she was an active volunteer for the Brown County community.

"She is survived by her children, JoAnn Rhodes of Brownwood; John and June Strickland of Brownwood; and Janet Waldon of Brownwood.

"She was "Nanny" to eleven grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

"She was preceded in death by her parents, the father of her children, John D. Strickland, an infant son born in Montrose, Colorado, her other two husbands, and her three sisters, Modene Stanley, Lucille Herring, and Sybil Johnson."
