Born in Nove Mesto Nad Vahom, Slovakia (formerly Czechoslovakia). Son of Joseph and
Eva(ne Surochek)Nanovic.

Worked for Street and Smith Publishing in New York City as an editor, and as a writer.

Used two pseudonyms (or pen names) Henry Lysing and Dean Callahan as well as his own name in some work.

Deeply involved in contributing and editing such works as ever popular "The Shadow" and "Doc Savage" stories, (Monthly magazines) and later Street & Smith's Mystery Detective.

Also wrote works such as Notre Dame—College of the Masses and Walter B. Gibson, Friend and later in 1974, Secret Writing: An Introduction to Cryptograms, Ciphers, and Codes.

He married Anne Powers in 1936 in Queens, New York and later moved back to PA until his death.
