On January 25, 1842, John was united in marriage to Harriet Jane Laforge, in Putnam County, New York. She was born born October 24, 1822, in Putnam County, New York, daughter of Mathias Teple Laforge and Margaret Lecount. She died November 18, 1900, at Colfax, Dunn County, Wisconsin, aged 78 years and 24 days and was buried there in Hill Grove Cemetery. Their eight children were:

Charles born 5 Feb 1843, Mence, N.Y.
Samuel 25 Feb 1845 Mence, N.Y.
Charlotte J. 30 Jan 1847 Sullivan, WI.
John Newcomb 18 May 1849 Fairport, IA.
James Bradford 21 Feb 1851 Sullivan, WI.
Hubbard 29 Sep 1853 Juneau Co., WI.
Alman H. 24 Jun 1857 Necedah, WI.
Samuel Robert 7 May 1860 Fairport, IA .

Three of their children died in infancy: Charles April 5, 1844, in Mence, New York; Samuel April 15, 1846, in Sullivan, Jefferson County, Wisconsin; and Hubbard born Sep. 29, 1853 in Germantown Township, Juneau County, Wisconsin, died October 1, 1855, in Necedah, Juneau County, Wisconsin.

John and Harriet Jane moved to Sullivan, Wisconsin sometime in 1845/46, about the same time as Moffats, but left for Iowa before 1850.

In the 1850 U.S. Census, John Baxter was listed as a 29 years old farmer living in Montpelier Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, with his 30 years old wife Harriet Jane Baxter and their children, 3 years old Charlotte Baxter and 1 year old John Newcomb Baxter.

In the 1860 U.S. Census, the census taker for Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, reported that the family "Removed before visited." Never-the-less, he reported the following information which must have been obtained from neighbors. John was listed as a 35 years old laborer living with his 35 years old wife Jane and children: Charlotte, age 13; Newcomb, age 12; Bradford, age 10; Alman, age 2; and 3/12 year old Samuel Robert Baxter.

In the 1860 U.S. Census John Baxter was listed as a 40 years old farmer with $100.00 worth of personal property living in Necedah, Juneau County, Wisconsin with his 41 years old wife Harriet Jane Baxter and their five children: 13 years old Charlotte Baxter; 11 years old Newcomb Baxter; 7 years old James Baxter; 3 years old Almon Baxter; and 6 months old Robert Baxter. Living next to John and Harriet Baxter was 34 years old Alpheus Baxter, his 33 years old wife Catherine, and their children: Abram, age 10; Charlotte, age 4; and 2 years old James Baxter. Alpheus was either a brother or a cousin of John Baxter. John and Alpheus were both born in New York, and one child of each was born in Iowa within one year of each other. It may be that Harriet Jane and Catherine were half sisters.

In the 1870 U.S. Census, John Baxter was listed as a 46 years old farmer with $1500 worth of real estate and $900 worth of personal property, living in Colfax, Dunn County, Wisconsin, with his 44 years old wife Jane Baxter and their three children: 18 years old Bradford Baxter; 13 years old Almund Baxter; and 9 years old Robert Baxter.

In the 1880 U.S. Census, John A. Baxter, was listed as a 56 years old farmer living in Colfax, Dunn County, Wisconsin, with his 57 years old wife Harriet Jane Baxter and their 19 years old son, Robert R. Baxter. His sons Alman and Bradford and their families were listed just prior to John and Harriet Jane in this census, indicating they had bordering farms.

In the 1900 U.S. Census, John Baxter was listed as a 76 years old farmer born in September 1823 and living in Colfax, Dunn County, Wisconsin. Obituary

Born Sept. 26, 1821
Died June 28, 1907
Long Life Ended.

At the home of his son J. B. Baxter in the town of Hay River at 6 o'clock A.M. last Friday, June 28th, John A. Baxter departed this life after biding his time with a general decline of the system covering a period of but a few months.

The deceased was born in Cayuga county, N.Y. Sept. 26, 1821, but came west in early days and located on a farm in Jefferson county, Wis., where he resided until the time of his departure.

Mr. Baxter was a faithful member of the Methodist church for many years, and was a regular attendant at church until his failing health made it impossible for him to be present; his great desire seeming to be the betterment of those about him.

He was father of eight children, only two of whom survive him, viz. A.H. Baxter of Withee, and J.B. Baxter of the town of Hay River, where his last days were spent. Mrs. Baxter's wife, whose maiden name was LaForge, died Nov. 18, 1900, so his departure now is but a reunion with his partner of life.

The funeral was conducted at the M. E. Church in the village last Sunday at two o'clock P.M., the Rev. W.T. Scott preaching the sermon, after which the remains were laid to rest beside those of his wife in Hill Grove cemetery.
