OBITUARY
We have this week the painful duty of announcing to our readers the decease of Mr. Enos Canutt, the veteran editor of the paper, who departed this life on Sunday the 15th inst., after a lingering illness of many months, in the forty sixth year of his age. To the people of Warren county, who have known Mr. Canutt so long, we know that a few lines in commemoration of one of its oldest and most respected citizens will not be uninteresting.
Mr. Canutt was a native of Ohio, but from early childhood a resident of Indiana, his father having removed to this state about forty years ago, and settled in the neighborhood of Crawfordsville. He received his education at Wabash College, and afterwards learned the business of a printer. At Crawfordsville he commenced his first enterprise in connection with the press as the publisher of the "Western Reporter," in partnership with Mr. George W. Snyder
About the year 1844 he removed to Independence and began the publication of the first newspaper ever established in this county under the name of the "Wabash Register." In 1846 he changed his place of residence to Attica, and was there the Editor and Publisher of the "Attica Journal." In 1848 he was induced to make Williamsport his home and established "The Wabash Commercial," and since that time, with the exception of an absence of a few months in Iowa, he had continued to edit and publish this paper, its name having been changed some five or six years since to the one it now bears.
During his long residence in Warren county, Mr. Canutt received the universal respect of its citizens. Modest and unassuming in his manners, and governed in all his actions by high moral and religious principles, his loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him. To his bereaved family we can offer no other consolations than such as must ever soften the departure of those who pass from earth to an assured and blessed immortality, and the sympathy of the whole community. Mr. Canutt was member of the Methodist church for many years and his daily walk and conversation gave testimony that his was not a hypocritical profession but a religion of the heart. His funeral took place on Monday afternoon from the Methodist church, at which a discourse was delivered by the Rev. Hezekiah Smith, the aster, from the Rev. 14th chapter, 13th verse. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord, from hence forth, yea saith the spirit that they may rest from their labors, and their works do follow them." After the service the procession proceeded to the grave where the deceased was buried with Masonic honors by the Master and brethren of Williamsport Lodge, No. 3 of which he was a member.
