He was the son of George Strock and Elizabeth Lotman. He married first to Lucretia F. Gardner on 23 September 1845 in Harrison County, Kentucky and with the permission of the bride's father. Lucretia died in childbirth and on 11 or 18 December 1848, Amos married second to Elizabeth Beattie in Andrew County, Missouri.
