Wava was born April 7, 1919, in Glenville to James and Tena (Eukel) Cipra. She graduated from Albert Lea High School and Winona State Teachers' College before beginning her elementary teaching career in Hollandale. There she met William Verdoorn, whom she married on June 12, 1942. After her marriage, Wava lived with her husband in Delavan, where she taught in the elementary school for many years and raised three children. She was dedicated both to her family and to the well being of her students, many of whom became lifelong friends.
Wava is survived by her children, William, Jr. (Catherine) Verdoorn of Rochester, Linda (Robert) Powers of Soquel, Calif., and Richard (Yvonne) Verdoorn of Rosemount; grandsons, Eric Verdoorn of Plymouth, Brandon (Janet) Verdoorn of Rochester, Jared (Allison) Verdoorn of Rochester and Alex Verdoorn of Kansas City, Mo.; sisters-in-law, Betty Verdoorn of Delavan and Jean Cipra of Northwood, Iowa; and many dear nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, William, her parents, a sister and two brothers.
The family would treasure remembrance messages sent to [email protected]. They request that any memorials be sent "in memory of Wava Verdoorn" to the Mayo Clinic Heart Research Program.
