EDWARD H. PIETZ
1921-2011
"Edward was generous to all. He was loved by his family and will be missed."

Edward H. Pietz passed away on May 31, 2011 in Vancouver, WA of natural causes. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Gloria Pietz; his daughter, Suzanne; his son, Lon; eight grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Mr. Pietz was born in Canada on March 9, 1921 and moved to Clark County with his family when he was a young child.

He served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. After his discharge from the Coast Guard, he started a construction company and built many homes, and several commercial buildings.

In 1957, Mr. Pietz and Todd McClaskey founded the Red Lion/Thunderbird organization with the opening of the Thunderbird Motor Inn adjacent to Portland's Memorial Coliseum. By the time the Red LionThunderbird chain was sold in 1985, it was the nation's largest independently owned and operated lodging network, with 56 properties in nine states. After the sale of the Red LionThunderbird network, Mr. Pietz formed and briefly operated Raffles Hotels and Inns.

After leaving the hospitality industry, Mr. Pietz began developing commercial and multifamily projects. Among the projects he built or remodeled are the Esther Street Professional Building, the Pacific Tower, the Running Springs Condominiums and the Vintage Oaks Condominiums. He was a partner in the development of the Mill Plain One planned unit development on East Mill Plain and built the Park Plaza Office Campus. He was a partner in the 400 unit Highland Hills Apartments and owner and developer of the 565 unit Mission Hills Apartments. He also assembled the land, now the site of Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital and the Salmon Creek Vancouver Clinic.

Edward H. Pietz loved places that did not yet exist except in his mind's eye. He was a true visionary, able to bring to life those things he dreamed of.

Edward H. Pietz will be interred at the Ridgefield Cemetery in a private ceremony. A public memorial will be held on Sunday, June 5, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. in the Mt. St. Helens Ballroom of the Red Lion Jantzen Beach, 909 NE Hayden Island Dr., Portland, OR.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the name of Edward H. Pietz to the Ray Hickey Hospice House, P. O. Box 1600, Vancouver, WA 98668.
