Jennie was born in Denison, Iowa, the daughter of William Dudley and Nancy Jane McCord Suiter. She married Joseph George Griffith Jr. in 1938. She was the mother of Bernice Faye Griffith.

She received her teaching degree at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught country school and then worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co., in Waterloo, and in California during WW2. After her husband's death, she worked at SunMart Grocery Store and finally at the Cedar Book Store, retiring in 1967. She was a member of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church and was a past member of East Park Presbyterian Church.

Jennie was named for her grandmother, Phebe Jane "Jennie" Schouten McCord. Her grandfather was David McCord of Dow City, Iowa.
