She taught country school and then worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co., in Waterloo, and in California during WW2. After her husband's death, she worked at SunMart Grocery Store and finally at the Cedar Book Store, retiring in 1967. She was a member of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church and was a past member of East Park Presbyterian Church.
Jennie was named for her grandmother, Phebe Jane "Jennie" Schouten McCord. Her grandfather was David McCord of Dow City, Iowa.
