US Congressman. Born in Albion, New York, during World War II, he served in the South Pacific as a 1st Lieutenant Artillery officer in the 32nd Infantry Division, US Army, (1943-45). After the war, he graduated from Princeton University in 1947, from Columbia Law School in 1949 and was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of law in New York City. He was assistant district attorney of New York County, (1950-61). In 1961, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-seventh Congress and reelected to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving until his death. He died of cancer at age 50 in New York City.
