Dr. James Luther Koontz was the son of John and Rachel Cate Koontz. He was a doctor practicing medicine 23 years with 17 years of his practice being in Grainger County. He died for a illness of several months. Surviving Dr. Koontz was his widow, Mattie Bean Koontz (age 49)(Mattie Koontz remarried; Mattie Koontz Atchley bd. Smoky Mtn Memory Gardens, Sevier County, TN); Sons, Carl, Herbert, John, Billy, and Roy; Daughters, Tressie and Margaret; brothers, W. N., H. A.; sister, Sallie K. Bean. He was preceded in death by son, Roy C. Koontz also buried at Dumplin Cemetery.
