Robert G. Ahlgren, Sr., 80, of Main Street, Middlefield, husband of Gloria (Olson) Ahlgren, died Saturday, (October 19, 2002) with his children at his side, at Middlesex Hospital, Middletown. Born and raised in New Britain, he was the son of the late Herbert C. and Dorothy (Hitchcock) Ahlgren and had lived in Middlefield for 46 years. A quiet, gentle man, hero to family and country, he served honorably in the First Marine Division, 7th Marines under Lt. Col. "Chesty" Puller in Apia, Upolu, Western Somoa, Guadalcanal in 1942; New Guinea, New Britain, British Solomon Islands in 1943; and Russell Islands in 1944. He received a Presidential Unit Citation, Asiatic-Pacific Bar-2 stars, American Defense Bar and ribbon, and Commanding General A.A. Vadergrift 1st Bn., 7th Marines citation. A five year inactive Marine, he returned to active service during the Korean Conflict. He was a builder and retiree of Bricklayers, Masons, and Allied Craftsmen Local 1 in Hartford. He was a member of the Middlefield VFW.
Besides his loving wife of 58 years, he is survived by a son, Robert G. Ahlgren, Jr. and his wife Patricia of Middlefield; a daughter, Cheryl E. Levesque and her husband Michael of Middlefield; four sisters, Jane Dixey of Bristol, Beverly Burkhead of Mount Dora, FL, Joyce Komanetsky of Burlington, NC, Nancy Wichniewicz of Westfield, IN; three grandchildren, Jesse Ahlgren of West Hartford, Kristen Schlicker of Washington, DC, Carl Schlicker of Middlefield; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Nye.
Funeral services were held at Christ Lutheran Church, 300 Washington Street, Middletown, on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Bruce Steinway, pastor, officiated and interment was in Middlefield Cemetery, Middlefield, where full Military Honors were be accorded.
