WARWICK -- Ronald W. Smart, 62, formerly of Warwick, died unexpectedly on May 5, 2011 at his new home in Hot Springs, Ark.

Born in Keene, N.H., on Jan. 14, 1949, he was a son of Robert and June (Soule)Smart and grew up in Warwick, graduating from Pioneer Valley Regional School in Northfield in 1967.

Ron worked at Erving Paper Mill briefly and then joined the United States Army on April 3,1968 where he worked as an aircraft electronic technician and saw three tours of duty in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 18, 1970.

Ron had worked at the former A. F. Dirth Lumber Company, Huntington Homes, Hamshaw Lumber and County Line Lumber, all of Orange, as well as the Brockway-Smith Company. Ron retired from Concrete Solutions.

Ron was a member of Orange American Legion Post 172, the Athol YMCA, and the Wheelerville Community Club in Orange.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hiking, camping, kayaking, and snowmobiling, as well as military history and working out at the gym.

Survivors include his sons, Shane Smart, currently living in Turkey, and Andy Smart of Melbourne, Fla.; a sister, Darlene L. Buraczynski of Hinsdale, N.H.; his partner Helene Scott of Warwick; and two nieces, Amanda and Michelle.

There are no calling hours.

A graveside service, with military honors, will be held on Saturday, May 21, at 2 p.m. in Warwick Center Cemetery, Orange Road-Rte. 78, Warwick.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Orange American Legion, P.O. Box 172, Orange, Mass. 01364


WARWICK -- A graveside service with military honors was held Saturday afternoon, May 21, in Warwick Center Cemetery, for Ronald W. Smart, 62, who died unexpectedly on May 5, 2011, in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Family and friends offered words of remembrance and the military honors were provided by the United States Army Honor Guard, Sgt. John Mitchell and Cpl. Juan Rameriez. Sgt. Mitchell presented the American flag to Ron's son, Shane Smart.

Following the service, a reception was held at the Wheelerville Community Club in Orange.

Witty's Funeral Home, 158 South Main St., Orange, was honored with directing the arrangements.
