Honarably discharged in 1865 and lost at sea off Cape Hattieras in 1867 when his ship, The City of Bath burned and sank. Later the Navy ship USS Cony was named after him. The bell from the Cony is displayed at the Quoddy Dam Model Museum on Water Street, Eastport, Maine.
