James (Jim) H. Dunlap's father was Nathaniel Smith Dunlap. Smith Dunlap enlisted with the Union Army during the Civil War and was severely wounded April 30, 1864 at Saline River, Arkansas. He died of his wounds June 4, 1864 at Princeton, Arkansas. His mother married for the 2nd time to Benjamin Phillips, a widower with 2 children. They moved to Indiana. Jim's mother had 4 or 5 more children by Mr. Phillips. Jim married Clara Idella Monroe and they had six childen - Idella died several days after the birth of the 6th child in 1897. On May 25, 1898, Jim married Laura Redford of Parke Co., Indiana. They moved to Oklahoma in 1909 when his union hired a train and traveled across the country in search of work for its members dropping them off when and whereever there was a job. Jim made it as far as El Reno, OK. He worked on the Southern Hotel there and later hand built the mock up for the Mack Truck Company. Jim and Laura had four children; their 1st and 4th each died within the same years of their birth. Jim was said to have been a very fine finish carpenter. Laura died in 1934 and he later moved to Houston to live with his eldest son, William E. Dunlap. He was a victim of arthritus rheumatism for nearly 5 years prior to his death and was confined to his bed for four years of that time.
