Donald R. Newkirk, 72, Crawfordsville, died 11:10 pm Friday in his home following an extended illness.
He was a retired truck driver, formerly employed by Alcoa and was a Crawfordsville Parks and Recreation maintenance worker. Mr. Newkirk attended Wallace, Alamo and New Ross schools and was a Korean War Army veteran. Memberships included Wallace Lutheran Church, Crawfordsville Calvary Chapel, VFW and American Legion.
He was born June 2, 1928, at Fountain County, to Millard and Leona P. Myers Newkirk. He married Betty Van Cleve on Aug. 13, 1983, at Crawfordsville. She survives.
Survivors include two daughters, Kay Wilhite and Susan McKinney, both of Crawfordsville; a stepson, Russell Lemon, Crawfordsville; two sisters, Barbara Conkright and Betty Graves, both of Crawfordsville; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 pm Tuesday in Shoemaker Funeral Home, 202 Indiana 25S, Waynetown, with the Rev. David Keesee officiating. Burial will be in Wallace Lutheran Cemetery. Military honors will be given graveside. Friends may call 4-8 pm today in the funeral home.
