Husband of Caroline Matilda (Walker) Bliven (1833-1904). Father of Abby, Millard, Levi Frank and Maria Bliven. Son of Samuel G. Bliven and Mabel Maria (Wheeler) Bliven. Died during his service in the Civil War at the Battle of Chickamauga. William was a private in the 78th Illinois Infantry, Company E. He enlisted on August 11, 1862 and was in the hospital in Nashville, Tennessee from May to August 1863. He was killed in action during his service at the Battle of Chickamuauga on Sept. 20, 1863.

Note: Although a marker exists for him in Burton Cemetery, he is most likely buried in one of the graves in Section M (grave 111 through 122) for the 78th Illinois Infantry in the Chattanooga National Cemetery, Chattanooga, Tenneessee. These graves are currently listed as "Unknown."
