At the age of 8, he came to Morgan county with his parents, locating near Lynnville.
In 1847, John went to California and stayed about a year. He tried to return by the way of Mexico, but got taken prisoner in Old Mexico. He was released when General Doniphan took the city. In 1849, he returned to California and made his way back to Morgan county on the back of a mule.
He married Miss Fannie Hodgkinson of Exeter, Scott County on January 16, 1851. Note that the article listed her as Gannie Hodgkinson and that the marriage record is under MICKINSON, JOHN R to HODGKINSON, FANNY. 1851-01-16 in Scott County.
At the age of 83, Mr. Megginson made a trip around the world. He was a very successful stock raiser, and for many years was a stockholder and director in the Morgan County fairs. He was a also a member of the Hospitalier Commandery NO. 31, Jacksonville chapter No. 3, Harmony Lodge No. 3.
He was survived by his wife and ten children. Only seven children were listed: Mrs. E. J. Hogg of Lynnville; Mrs. Mary Douglas of Rose Hill, Iowa; G.A. Megginson, R. W. Megginson, R.D. Megginson, Mrs. Lunie Reynolds, and S.S. Megginson of Woodson.
