Tod was a graduate of the University of Mississippi, where he received a degree in History and Geography. He also received a master's degree from the University of West Georgia in school counseling. He was retired from the Clayton County School System, where he served as a techer, school counselor and coach during his 35-year career. Tod was an avid tennis player and coach, winning numerous awards in tournaments and on the ALTA teams he coached and played for. Tod was also a passionate golfer.
Memorial service was held May 28 at the Providence Congregational Methodist Church in Jackson, GA with Reverend Mary Jo Willoughby officiating. Ford-Stewart Funeral Home in Jonesboro in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Tod Benz married Peggy Anita Hardin on August 14, 1976 in Clark, Nevada.
