John Heard, this Stephen's brother received land in Georgia for military services and on the last day of 1773, Stephen and some of his sons and John and his sons traveled to a site one mile from where Washington, Wilkes County, Georgia is today. New Year's Day 1774 they felled the first trees that becomes a stockade, and ultimately, Fort Heard.
A few months into the felling and clearing of the land, Stephen became very sick and was taken back to Virgina. His death was in 29 October 1774.

His nephew, Col Stephen Heard b 1741-1815 was Governor May 1780-Aug 1781 and was the son of John Heard Jr and Bridget Carroll, this Stephen's brother. It has been suggested that John's wife, Bridget Carroll was also a Faulkner, sister of Mary Faulkner, Stephen's wife.
