"The name Gardner does not show up in any Surry County, North Carolina census until 1860. That year both D. A.[Daniel A] Gardiner and E. Y. Gardiner are listed. This would seem to indicate that they were the first Gardners to settle in Surry County, North Carolina. D. A. and E. Y. [Emuel Yancey] were brothers."
