Cleary, who had been with the U.S. Treasury Department for about 10 years, began his career in the Philadelphia Office of the Secret Service, then was transferred to Thousand Oaks, Calif., where he was assigned to the detail guarding Maureen Reagan, President Reagan's daughter, for about four years.
He was brought back to the Philadelphia Office about a year ago.
Originally from West Philadelphia, Cleary was an outstanding athlete in a number of sports at St. Thomas More High school. He was a 1964 graduate of Temple University, with a major in journalism.
"He was par excellence as an investigator," said Jim Kelly, a former treasury agent. "He could be guarding heads of state one day and locking up criminals on the street the next. He always maintained his equilibrium and character. His love of country was exceeded only by his love of family."
While assigned to Philadelphia a number of years ago, Cleary lived in Havertown, Delaware County. He was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War.
He is survived by his wife, the former Cherrie C. Knowles; a son, Patrick F.; a daughter, Bridget E.; his mother, Dora Bant ; his grandmother, Elizabeth Villa; two brothers, Larry Cleary and Anthony Pye, and three sisters, Cheryl Jefremow, Susanne DellaVecchio and Patricia Domzalicki.
Mass of Christian Burial was to be celebrated at 11 a.m. today at St. John Neumann Church, Radnor Road, Bryn Mawr. Burial will be in Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Sproul and Crum Creek roads, Marple Township, Delaware County.
