According to censuses, John was born around 1820 in Ohio. He married Charlotte (Bell) Sheldon in Hancock County, Ohio in 1849. In 1850, they lived in Licking County, Ohio. The 1860 census finds them in Williams County, Ohio. According to his son, Abner Heater's obituary, the family came to Lincoln, Nebraska "in 1870 from Williams County, Ohio. Two days after the family landed the father died." His widow, Charlotte Heater, who died nearly forty years later, is buried beside him.
