Harry Oscar Strickler, 70, owner and operator of the Strickler's Hardware and Furniture Store, of Shenandoah, and prominent civic leader, died early Monday morning, February 14, at the University of Virginia Hospital, where he had been a patient since last Wednesday. He had been hospitalized in the Rockingham Memorial Hospital, and the University of Virginia Hospital, several times since last September, when his health started declining.

Mr. Stricker was born on September 5, 1895, in Luray, and was six weeks old when his parents moved to Shenandoah. He was the son of the late Gilbert J. and Lula Gander Strickler.

He served in the Navy in World War II, aboard the USS Kansas. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, a director of the Virginia National Bank in Shenandoah, a charter member and director of the Shenandoah Industrial and Development Corporation, and a member of the Stewart Comer American Legion Post 107, and the Avis O. Comer Post 8613 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

On September 5, 1926, he was united in marriage with Miss Gertrude Porterfield, who survives.

Mr. Strickler was active in the civic affairs of his community, and a dependable supporter of all projects associated with progress and improvement of his community. He was an outstanding business man, and well known for fair dealing with everyone he served. He was the oldest merchant in business in Shenandoah.

His passing will be greatly felt by many organizations of which he was a member, in business circles, in the community, in his home and among a host of friends.

Besides his widow, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. J.J. (Patricia) Lam, of Oxford, N.C.; and a sister, Mrs. Eva S. Roudabush, of McLean, Va. A brother, Owen M. Strickler, Sr. preceded him in death in January of 1960.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, from the Chapel of the Warren G. Kyger Funeral Home, with his pastor, the Rev. Alvin Y. Allen and the Rev. Nathan Fox, a former pastor, officiating. Mrs. Robert Brubaker was at the organ and accompanied the soloist, Robert Brubaker, who sang "Crossing the Bar". The Eastlawn Memorial Garden was chosen for Mr. Strickler's eternal resting place.
